AU COEUR DU CHAOS ⎯ L'art de LYNE BASTIEN
Bien des bouleversements ont secoué le monde depuis la dernière exposition de Lyne Bastien à Montréal (2020). Or, il semble que l’artiste ait su trouver une paix au cœur du chaos. S’il y a quelque chose de réconfortant à retrouver dans la présente exposition le vocabulaire ayant servi à la production d’œuvres passées, on y décèle aussi tout le chemin parcouru. Lors d’une résidence dans le sud de la France, Bastien a renoué, cinq ans après avoir effectué un premier séjour dans le même petit atelier, avec la lumière éblouissante et les couleurs vives de la Méditerranée. Quelques mois plus tard, à peine sortie du tumulte d’un grand déménagement (domicile et atelier), elle effectua une autre résidence, dans la baie Georgienne cette fois. Après six années d’immersion dans le paysage dépouillé du Grand Nord, ces deux résidences lui firent éprouver avec intensité le choc de la différence : lumière, couleurs luxuriantes, eaux turquoise aux teintes se transformant sans cesse, depuis l’aube jusqu’au crépuscule. De plus, le contact avec le territoire situé à la limite sud du Bouclier canadien a conduit l’artiste à une expérience aussi essentielle qu’imprévue. Là, dans la baie Georgienne, a commencé une exploration de ce qu’elle percevait et ressentait sans être toutefois parvenue à l’exprimer de manière satisfaisante. Tout en convoquant des éléments, des images, des formes et des souvenirs familiers, l’art évolue. Et parfois, comme ce fut alors le cas, survient un moment charnière. C’est la fin de quelque chose, le début d’une autre. La capacité de Bastien à produire des œuvres témoignant au plus près de sa vie est l’une de ses forces en tant qu’artiste. Le récent changement de sa palette de couleurs en est un exemple. En transcendant la technique pour s’accorder l’entière liberté de transformer son vécu en images fascinantes et éminemment personnelles, elle ouvre un nouveau chapitre dans son corpus. Sa maîtrise de l’interprétation artistique est une joie pour qui s’arrête à la contempler.

AMIDST THE CHAOS – The art of LYNE BASTIEN
Much has happened in the world since Lyne Bastien’s last exhibition in Montréal in 2020, but the works in this exhibition demonstrate the obvious: that Bastien found peace amidst the chaos. It was no doubt soothing to play with these familiar forms and memories after her six-year residency in Nunavik (Arctic Québec). She continued to work with them during a recent retreat to a tiny borrowed studio in the south of France where she had worked almost five years ago. On both occasions, she was dazzled by the ambient light of the area and by the vivid colours of the Mediterranean Sea. While most of her motifs and images are familiar to us, art like life moves on. It should, therefore, be no surprise that there is a discernible evolution happening in this exhibition – a turning point – with evidence of both an end and a beginning. The works were created after the trips to France and her trip to Georgian Bay, at the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. By all accounts, this last sojourn was a profound and unexpected experience after living in the barren terrain of the Far North. In Northern Ontario as in France, everything was different but much more so – the quality of light, the fauna, the verdant landscape, the colours of the water, and the myriad changes in all of it as day progressed to evening. Thus began a quest to exploit what she saw and felt but could not yet fully express in her work. Let us factor in the disruption of the move to a new home and studio. Bastien’s ability to bear witness to the act of living in the world is one of her most significant attributes as an artist. As such, the first step during this period was to be seen as a shift in her palette of colours. Now that she has given herself full rein to convert her lived experience and her new reality into compelling and distinctive images, she has opened a new chapter in her unique body of work. Her mastery of artistic interpretation is a joy to behold.
